CORPUS CHRISTI - Every move was the right move.
Like switching Pat McCrory from shortstop to relief pitcher.
Or moving Travis Tucker from the bottom of the order to the
leadoff spot.
And starting Josh Prince at shortstop.
Everything Texas
baseball coach Augie Garrido has done over the past week looked
like the right move Tuesday as McCrory pitched three-plus innings, Tucker
had five RBIs and Prince looked like the Longhorns'
new starting shortstop during a 10-6 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi.
"You've got to like when that happens," Garrido said.
And you've got to like when the Horns
(13-6) respond to a charged atmosphere that saw three players get ejected,
including Texas'
Nick Peoples for arguing strikes, and Chance Wheeless for a
scuffle with the Islanders' Jason Graham.
"There was a lot of bantering going on. There was a lot of
chattering going on between the players," Garrido said of Wheeless'
incident, which occurred after a pickoff play and resulted in the
Islanders' bench clearing. "The Islanders were battling ...
They put everything they had into it, and some of it resulted in some
contact. I think it's one of those spontaneous moments."
But the ejections couldn't overshadow McCrory's performance. The
sophomore transfer from Navarro College spent parts of last season as a
reliever, but his 3 2/3 innings of two-hit pitching might have sealed his
spot in the Longhorns'
pen.
"Obviously we've struggled some with right-handed pitching,"
Garrido said. "We tried Prince there, but Prince has settled in
at shortstop. If McCrory can help us pitching, it means more to this
team than it does at shortstop."
McCrory helped Tuesday.
"I didn't expect to throw so many innings, but it's going good so
far," said McCrory, who struck out four Tuesday. "I've
been throwing for a week, but my arm feels good."
McCrory relieved Hunter Harris, who gave up three runs in the
third inning as the Islanders tied the game at 3.
That's when Texas
responded. With runners on second and third, Tucker, who was 3 for
5, grounded a two-run single to center field to put the Horns
up for good.
Texas,
which takes on Miami (Ohio) at UFCU Disch-Falk Field this weekend, scored
in eight of the nine innings. The Horns
kept their lead with good defense.
Bradley Suttle made a diving play at third base in the first
inning, Jordan Danks made a diving catch in center field in the
sixth, and Prince, who had an RBI and scored a run, made a great play at
shortstop to end the Islanders' three-run eighth.
"What separated the teams was the athleticism on defense,"
Garrido said. "The catch Danks made, it takes that kind of guy
to be able to do that. The play Prince made in the eighth, it takes
that kind of guy. Bradley Suttle's play early kept that inning under
control."
