February 29, 2008

A capacity crowd of Texas Exes and University supporters gathered to hear keynote speaker William C. Powers, Jr., President of The University of Texas, at the Texas Exes' annual Texas Independence Day Celebration on February 28 at the Corpus Christi Country Club.

The event, marking President Powers' second official visit to Corpus Christi, kicked off with a cocktails and hors d'oeuvres reception.

Event Co-Chairs Barry L. O'Neal, Vice President - Events, and William T. Flynn, Vice President - Membership, got the night started by welcoming the distinguished crowd and introducing Mary L. Flynn, Director, who spoke about the brave men who fought for the independence of The Republic of Texas.

Ronald E. Lowe, Vice President - Scholarship, continued the program by introducing retired professor Kenneth J. Erwin, Ph.D., who spoke on the beginnings of The State of Texas' "Flagship University of the First Class".

J. Michael Carrizales III, Chairman and President, thanked everyone for attending and briefly discussed the principles which make Texas Exes such a great and worthy organization.  He then introduced William C. Powers, Jr., The University of Texas President, who addressed many University topics such as University History, public education in the State of Texas, admission requirements, Texas athletics, and the recent Democratic Presidential debate held on University campus.

The night closed with the singing of "The Eyes of Texas".

Details of the event can be found at the Texas Exes website, www.TexasExesCC.org .
