A capacity crowd of
Texas Exes
and University supporters gathered to hear keynote speaker William C.
Powers, Jr., President of The University of
Texas, at the Texas Exes'
annual Texas Independence Day
Celebration on February 28 at the Corpus Christi Country Club.
The
event, marking President Powers' second official visit to Corpus Christi, kicked off with
a cocktails and hors d'oeuvres reception.
Event
Co-Chairs Barry L. O'Neal, Vice President - Events, and William
T. Flynn, Vice President - Membership, got the night started by
welcoming the distinguished crowd and introducing Mary L. Flynn,
Director, who spoke about the brave men who fought for the independence of
The Republic of Texas.
Ronald E.
Lowe, Vice President - Scholarship, continued the program by
introducing retired professor Kenneth J. Erwin, Ph.D., who spoke on
the beginnings of The State of Texas' "Flagship University of the
First Class".
J. Michael
Carrizales III, Chairman and President, thanked everyone for attending
and briefly discussed the principles which make Texas
Exes such a great and worthy organization. He then
introduced William C. Powers, Jr., The
University of Texas President, who addressed many University
topics such as University History, public education in the State of Texas,
admission requirements, Texas
athletics, and the recent Democratic Presidential debate held on
University campus.
The night closed
with the singing of "The Eyes of Texas".
